CARSON CITY -- University of Nevada, Reno, officials on Wednesday awarded three grants for research into the incidence of cancer that has sickened and killed several children living in Fallon over the past decade.
The research projects will be supported through more than $700,000 in funding that was secured by U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., for the organization Families in Search of Truth, a Fallon-based group of families whose children were diagnosed with childhood leukemia.

The grants will go to:
Joseph Wiemels of the University of California San Francisco, who will examine genetic and epigenetic changes in the cells of leukemia patients.
Chris Pritsos of the University of Nevada, Reno, who will examine various elements found in the Fallon drinking water and their affect on overall immune function.
Mark Witten from the University of Arizona, who will examine the role of tungsten in the leukemic process.
