After making just 3 of 11 shots in the third quarter, Mojave's boys basketball team started the final period with two of the highest percentage shots.

The Rattlers got dunks on consecutive possessions -- the first on an alley-oop from Darian Norris to Anthony Marshall and the second on a fast break by Donte Poole -- to retake control on the way to a 74-65 win over Poly (Calif.) in the championship game of the Vegas Valley Invitational at Desert Pines.

Mojave led by 14 before Poly cut the lead to 48-45 after three quarters.

"We had to rededicate and refocus and push our aggression on them," Mojave coach Tony Hopkins said. "And once we did that, we got the game back established again."

Mojave rode the hot shooting of Poole to a 33-22 halftime lead. The senior guard was 7-for-11 from the field in the first half, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range.

"Donte was stroking the ball exceptionally well and we ran several specials for him and he was knocking his shot down," Hopkins said. "I think they zoned us hoping we'd miss shots, and to the contrary we actually came out and made shots. And when Donte got going, we kept calling his number."

Poole finished with 31 points and nine rebounds. He was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring 101 points in four games.

"Everybody knows that Donte and Anthony and (Norris) are our strengths," Hopkins said. "We lean on Donte a little bit more than the others because he's a senior. He played exceptionally well."

Norris added 16 points and four assists, and Marshall had 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Kevin James had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Rattlers.

D.J. Gay led Poly with 23 points, but Mojave made him work hard to get his shots and kept him from dishing off to teammates on drives.

"We tried to gap him and eliminate him making everyone else around him better, because we had watched him and he just cut somebody up," Hopkins said. "He'd get in the lane and flip the ball left and right and they scored layup after layup."

Valley 86, Kalaheo (Hawaii) 69 -- At Desert Pines, Hank Thorns had 30 points to lead the Vikings over the Mustangs in a consolation game.

Alonzo Brandon added 19 points for Valley, which led 51-50 entering the fourth quarter.

Thorns scored 15 points in the final eight minutes as the Vikings outscored Kalaheo 35-19 to pull away.

Cordero Harris added 11 points, and Deante Jones scored 10 for Valley.

Cheynne Lishman led Kalaheo with 16 points in a losing effort.
