MIKE WEATHERFORD: And now for something completely different: 'Dragapella'

"Dragapella" comes to the Las Vegas Hilton Shimmer Cabaret for an open-ended run beginning March 3.

The Las Vegas Hilton's Shimmer Cabaret will be permanently fabulous when the campy off-Broadway revue "Dragapella" settles in for an open-ended run starting March 3.

The departure point from standard drag shows is that the four stars actually sing rather than lip-sync a la "An Evening at La Cage." While "Dragapella" is the title, the Kinsey Sicks is the name of the drag quartet performing the satirical revue.

"It's certainly a very different kind of show than people often expect when they walk in the door," co-founder Irwin Keller noted in 2004. "Even if they expect us to sing, they really don't expect it to sound beautiful."

"We're excited. Finally, after years of showcasing," says Paul Reder, who will co-produce the show with Rich Super. The two have presented "Dragapella" in isolated performances at the Hilton and Westin Causuarina since early 2004. They also produced "Forbidden Vegas" at the Westin in 2004-'05.

The revue will be staged at 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays; the base ticket price is $42.50. "Dragapella" shares the room with another off-Broadway title, "Menopause, The Musical," which opens Wednesday. But "Menopause" leaves the evening window open wider by having a 2 p.m. matinee on Wednesdays and both shows early on Sunday, at 2 and 5 p.m.

"I don't think we're splitting the audience," Reder says of having two off-Broadway revues in one venue. "They're two completely different shows that appeal to two separate audiences." ...

Two other comedic icons of the gay scene are Las Vegas bound. Roseanne Barr plays the Stardust Feb. 21-26. And Coast Casinos may have miscalculated the appeal of Kathy Griffin by booking her at Suncoast April 14-16. Judging by the response, the comedian who gets a lot of TV time on Bravo could have gone straight to the larger theater at The Orleans. ...

Back on the Strip, comedian George Wallace last week started his third year at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

"I came here for 30 days and it has been two years already, can you believe that?" he says. He adds it has been "a lot of hard work, a lot of marketing. I four-wall the whole thing, so I do it all," he says of working for ticket revenue and paying his own marketing costs.

Wallace has taken to giving away prizes to audience members, everything from jewelry to models of the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign.

This year, Wallace may have weeks when he bills co-stars such as Jimmie "J.J." Walker, Chris Tucker and David Brenner, who recently closed at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Wallace says Tucker, of "Rush Hour" fame, "wants to work corporate (gigs) and go out and make the big money. ... This is the right place to learn how to do that, because it's an audience of everybody." ...

Never say "Done": Director Franco Dragone is again returning to Wynn Las Vegas to tinker with "Le Reve," the aquatic revue that made an underwhelming impression when it opened in April. The latest round of tweaks should make their way into the show by late February or early March. Conspirators who keep rumoring that the "Le Reve" pond will be drained for a Bette Midler showcase would have to wonder why Dragone would bother. They can always shift the Midler rumors over to the "Avenue Q" theater. ...

Vanishing and appearing: Young magician Curtis Adams quietly closed shop at the Plaza at year's end. He had been there since October. Hypnotist Anthony Cools moved into his new digs at the Excalibur last week. Expect the Excalibur to soon announce a fourth show, one that will share space on the hotel's second floor with "The Thunder from Down Under." Don't be surprised if it's portly comedian Louie Anderson.
