A Las Vegas radio station challenged a new city ordinance that makes it illegal to give food to homeless people in city parks.

The KKLZ-FM, 96.3 morning team of "Kahuna & Company" had two employees pass out donuts, cold sodas and iced teas to about 40 homeless people in Frank Wright Park near City Hall.

"Fed up with the mayor's proclamation that it is against the law to feed the homeless in the park, we did just that," Jim Tofte, a member of the morning show, said in an e-mail.

Fifteen minutes after arriving, the radio station's traffic girl, "Backseat Beth," and an intern were told to leave by police.

"What a crime!" said Tofte, referring to the ordinance passed last week by the Las Vegas City Council.

"What these poor souls all have in common is they don't get enough information filtered down to them telling them what is legal and what isn't."

Diana R. Paul, the city's senior public information officer, did not return a call by deadline.

BREAD WINNER

Rudy Tomjanovich, director of scouting for the USA Basketball senior program, was moving slices of bread around on the table, talking strategy, during a coaches dinner at Corsa Cuchina (Wynn) on Monday when head coach Mike Krzyzewski added a centerpiece.

He grabbed a bottle of water, placed it in the middle of the bread formation and announced, "I'm putting Shaq in."
