The idea for an exhibit of a group of Chinese artists teaching in American colleges originated several years ago with art professor Yu Ji from California State College at Long Beach.
Most of the 18 artists represented, who teach in 13 states across the country, received their initial studio experience in undergraduate schools in their native lands.
When they began their graduate studies in American universities, they discovered how much their previous work had been influenced by ideological disputes. But in academic environments that encouraged individuality, they have gained different perspectives that are reflected in their current work.
The exhibit includes a wide range of mediums and artistic styles, from the figurative to the conceptual and abstract.
The artists represented, in addition to curator Yu Ji, are Xiaowen Chen from Cornell University; Brian Chu, University of New Hampshire; Amy Cheng, State University of New York; Lin Xia Jiang, State University of New York at Buffalo; Lampo Leong, University of Missouri-Columbia; Ying Lin, Haverford College; Qing Liu, San Antonio College; Xuhong Shang, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale; Ying Tan, University of Oregon; Howard Tran, Lycoming College, Pennsylvania; Yida Wang, University of Hawaii at Manoa; Xiaoze Xie, Bucknell University; Hui-Chu Ying, University of Akron; Josh Yu, Savannah College of Art and Design; Lawrence Yun, California State University, Fullerton; Baochi Zhang, University of New Mexico; and Xiaohong Zhang, University of Wisconsin, Whitewater.
