That sounds like an adaptation of Ben Mezrich's book "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions."

Spacey spent several months here in early 2000 filming "Pay It Forward" with Helen Hunt, Haley Joel Osment, Jay Mohr and James Caviezel (who went from Jerry, a homeless person, to an iconic role as Jesus in "The Passion of the Christ" three years later).
