ELKO -- An Elko County jury found a 22-year-old woman guilty of child abuse and neglect but innocent of first-degree murder on Thursday in the starvation death of her infant daughter.
Salvana Fernandez of Elko cried after the verdict was read. She was accused of deliberately starving 7-month-old Monica Uribe.

The baby weighed just over eight pounds when she was pronounced dead at the Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital in February 2005, police said.
Jurors waded through more than a week of testimony and deliberated for a day and a half before acquitting her on the murder charge and opting for felony child abuse.
Fernandez faces anywhere from two to 20 years in prison under the felony conviction. Elko District Judge Mike Memeo has not yet set a sentencing date.
The baby's father -- Florencio Carlos Uribe, 22, of Elko -- is scheduled to stand trial on the same charges in August.
Elko Deputy District Attorney Troy Jordan said he was happy with the verdict. He said sentencing should be set within 45 days.
"It's our system. If that's how they feel, that's how they feel," Jordan told the Elko Daily Free Press. "The system does work."
Fernandez's attorney, Matt Stermitz, didn't say whether he was pleased or displeased with the verdict.
"It's just a very, very sad case," Stermitz said. "I feel bad. I feel lonely."
Fernandez's mother, Patsy Fernandez, also was crying and hugging her daughter after the verdict.
"She did not do it," Fernandez said when asked about the jury's decision. "She would never do nothing to hurt her kids."
