LETTERS: Family Court can lead to desperation

To the editor:

Thank you for publishing Dean Tong's "Mack has failed fathers everywhere" opinion column in Tuesday's paper.

While I certainly don't agree with the actions Darren Mack is accused of taking and feel he should be properly punished for any crimes he committed, I appreciate Mr. Tong's feelings on the breakdown of our family court systems and the negative, instead of positive, impact it has on the family structure. I also appreciate his feelings on Mack's personal breakdown.

It has been my own personal and recent experience that this system fails fathers on a daily basis. Mr. Tong's suggestions on helping to improve the court are something I fully support. I have tried to make an effort to voice this to our legislators and community in my own way.

My only hope is that my own situation, where my fiance continues to fight for his son in this dysfunctional system, will improve -- although it seems to me that Family Court judges simply hold fathers guilty in every regard and make drastic judgments on cases when mothers simply spew a number of false allegations to get the custody and money they want. All this regardless of what the "child's best interests" are.

It's no surprise to me that so many good fathers are quickly cracked by the court system and turn into deadbeat dads -- because so many of them feel that they are "losing it all" despite their very best efforts.

Hooker sting

To the editor:

The recent use of more than 100 police officers to arrest 185 prostitutes on the streets of Las Vegas is an absolute waste of our police resources. The officers arrested a local judge pro-tem and released his quotes to the media with the intent of humiliating this individual.

This is just another instance of police mismanagement of our tax dollars. The community as a whole does not support this type of police operation and waste of public resources. This is a perfect example as to why we need a national search for a sheriff.

Education system

To the editor:

In response to Andrew Sheridan's letter ("Teacher pay," June 27): I find it rather ironic he would reference casino valets, whom he dubs "car baby sitters," for his diatribe. He writes how "even a second-rate educator should be higher on the food chain than a guy who parks your car." I know some very well-educated valets who might take exception to that.

The very fact you can drop your vehicle off at local establishments and for a couple of bucks be assured it will come back to you unscathed is testimony to the valet's commitment to his job. Unfortunately, the opposite seems to be true with our children in the school system -- albeit nationwide. We don't have the same assurance our children will be treated as well as our automobiles.

The education nannies have been beating their "fiscal drums" since the inception of public education, and it hasn't been about the children. It rarely seems to occur to those who would have us "taxpayers" drown the education system in money that the problem is not financial, it's fundamental.

The education system should be working hand in hand with parents (who are removed from the equation in most public education systems) and individual communities to achieve the highest standards possible.

I would be willing to say that if our nation's youth were on top of the world in learning, then it would probably lead to educators being better paid and more respected than "car baby sitters."

But that's just my opinion.

Ridiculous issue

To the editor:

Why is our government wasting valuable time on a flag desecration amendment? There are many important issues that need to be addressed. Could it be that our government doesn't know how to solve Americans' problems, so it turns to issues that are based solely on emotion and require no solutions?

The flag is nothing but a symbol for America. To think that such a ridiculous issue has merit is an affront to the Constitution and everything for which it stands.

Interesting how this administration is trying to "spread freedom and democracy," while at the very same time take away freedom from Americans.
