WINE OF THE WEEK: Bulgarian wine proves value

This Telish blended wine is the top selection from the finest producer of wine in Bulgaria.

Bouquet Telish has some 800 acres of vineyards to pick the best grapes from. Winemaker Jaro Agopian makes classic Bordeaux-style wines that see only neutral oak, thereby preserving the pure fruit from well-ripened cabernet and merlot grapes. The company also has Michel Rolland, the world's foremost oenological consultant, working for it.

As a result, Telish is way ahead of the game and is firmly established as a leading producer in what will become the next big emerging wine region in the world.

The wine also is a bargain at $7, and has few peers in terms of quality in this bracket.

In the glass, this Telish Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot is a firm, deep semiopaque ruby-red color with a dark crimson core going out into a light red to pinkish rim definition and medium-high viscosity.

On the nose, the wine exudes classical elements of cabernet sauvignon and merlot with concentrated soft extract of black and red berries, dominated by brambleberry, raspberry sorbet and creamy blueberry from the merlot and just pure fruits of the forest, cassis and mint leaf with neutral oak influences from the cabernet.

On the palate, the wine is soft and rounded with slightly spicy berry fruit, sloe fruit juice, elderberry, mulberry and hints of fruit-driven minerals. The midpalate is firm and softly tannic.

It is an excellent medium-bodied wine to be enjoyed with grilled lamb or veal chops. While it drinks well right out of the bottle, letting it sit for about 30 minutes before consumption will show its full potential. It should age for about four to five years, but can be drunk during the entirety of this period with great pleasure.
