With six minutes remaining in its game Friday, things did not look good for the Cheyenne High football team.

The Desert Shields had just finished blowing a 26-point lead in front of their home crowd, and Centennial had all the momentum.

But somehow, Cheyenne's offense was able to stage a wild rally in the final minutes to beat the Bulldogs, 39-34.

Deshawn Proby rushed 10 times for 140 yards and a touchdown to lead the Desert Shields (4-2, 2-1 Northeast), but his 88-yard touchdown reception with 5:43 remaining turned the game around.

"That was a big play," said Cheyenne coach Charles Anthony. "It should have been enough to give us the win."

But it almost wasn't. After the Bulldogs (3-4, 1-3) went ahead 27-26 on a Michael Tagliaferri TD run midway through the fourth quarter, Proby's reception put the Desert Shields ahead 32-27 on the next play.

Cheyenne quarterback D.J. Campbell extended the lead to 39-27 with a 2-yard run two minutes later, but the Bulldogs battled back with an 11-yard TD reception by Austin Hill with 1:32 left. They recovered the ensuing onside kick to give themselves a second chance at a rally.

"We just couldn't get a stop there at the end," Anthony said. "You have to give Centennial credit. They did a great job making adjustments."

Fortunately for Anthony, his squad was able to stave off Centennial's final drive, which fizzled at the Desert Shields 38-yard line with 30 seconds to go.

Cheyenne built its 26-0 first-half lead behind touchdown runs by Proby, V'son Milton and Anthony Johnson and a 10-yard pass from Campbell to Shamario Jones.

But Tagliaferri scored on a 9-yard run late in the first half, then led the Bulldogs back with scoring passes to Tyson Turley and Zach McCoy in the third quarter.

Tagliaferri completed 16 of 42 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns for Centennial, but his three interceptions hurt the Bulldogs.

Campbell completed 4 of 11 passes for Cheyenne for 186 yards and two touchdowns.

• Palo Verde 24, Western 13 -- At Western, the Panthers erased a seven-point, fourth-quarter deficit with three touchdowns and snapped the Warriors' three-game winning streak.

The Panthers came up with 18 points, a key interception and a blocked punt in the final quarter to avoid the upset.

Rashan Lawrence scored two touchdowns and Rockney Ricafrente added a short TD run for Palo Verde, which outgained Western 119-5 in the fourth quarter.

Four Shadow Ridge turnovers and an improbable play at the end of the first half helped Mojave (5-2, 2-1 Northwest) rebound from a 28-6 second-quarter deficit.

Despite struggling on offense in the second half, Shadow Ridge appeared to have gotten the big play it needed when fullback Tavis Brown converted a fourth down with a 3-yard run to the Mojave 38 with 1:42 left.

But on the next play, Mustangs quarterback Chris Lowman and running back Jeremiah Dotson fumbled the handoff, and Mojave recovered at the Shadow Ridge 47.

The Rattlers quickly took advantage as quarterback Chad Kelly connected twice to Kris Salvador for a total of 28 yards before hooking up with Garcia for the game winner.

Four of Mojave's five touchdowns were scored after Shadow Ridge turnovers.

One key play for Mojave came on the last play of the first half.

With the Rattlers backed up on their own 20 with eight seconds left in the second quarter, Kelly tossed to Garcia, who threw to Matthew Taylor. The ball was deflected by a Shadow Ridge defender, bounding forward to Taylor, who ran the final 45 yards for a touchdown.
