For the second straight week, Palo Verde's vaunted rushing attack struggled, this time against a young but athletic Cheyenne team.

But unlike last week, when the Panthers scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull out a victory over Western, Palo Verde couldn't recover, suffering its first loss to the Desert Shields in four years.

No. 8 Cheyenne scored 22 first-half points and went on to upset the fifth-ranked Panthers 22-14 at Palo Verde High School.

It was a strange game, perfect for Friday the 13th, that featured a fifth down, a 25-yard loss for a safety and a 44-minute lightning delay.

Still, it was Cheyenne that made the biggest statement, holding Palo Verde to 86 yards rushing.

"We spent plenty of time in the film room this week," Cheyenne Charles Anthony said. "We have some young, athletic talent on this team. To beat Palo Verde is a big win for our program."

Just as impressive as the Cheyenne defense was the play of senior Deshawn Proby. He turned in 210 all-purpose yards, including a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that broke the game open. Proby also rushed for 86 yards on 12 carries.

The Desert Shields (4-3, 3-1 Northwest) got TD runs from V'son Milton and Anthony Johnson to take a 13-0 lead in the second quarter.

Cheyenne then scored nine points in an 11-second span thanks to a safety and Proby's kick return, pushing the margin to 22.

Palo Verde (5-2, 2-2) finally scored late in the second period as quarterback J.D. Buonantony found Robert Coburn on a 25-yard pass play.

The Panthers pulled within eight points with 2:36 left, on a 4-yard run from Rashan Lawrence. But Cheyenne scooped up Ashleigh Shoughro's onside kick attempt, and the Desert Shields ran out the clock.

"We made plays early," Anthony said. "Palo Verde made some adjustments and kept coming back. I'm just proud of the way our kids responded. This game meant a lot to us."

Cheyenne gained 217 yards, all on the ground.

• Green Valley 7, Basic 0 -- At Basic, defensive back John Poindexter caught a desperation toss from Wolves running back L.J. Marquez and skipped into the end zone in the third quarter to lift the Gators (4-3, 2-1 Southeast) to victory.

Basic (2-5, 0-3) began the drive on its own 4-yard line with a steady wind and rain in its face following a Green Valley punt. After a fumbled snap, a false start and an incomplete pass, the Wolves were pinned to their own goal line and facing third-and-13.

Marquez took a direct snap and ran left but was quickly swarmed by the Gators. He tossed the ball out of the crowd and toward the left sideline in an attempt to avoid a safety but instead threw it right to Poindexter, who scored easily.

After a scoreless first half ruled by defense, the rains opened up at halftime and didn't let up the rest of the game, contributing to frustration and conservation for both offenses.

Green Valley didn't attempt one pass in the second half, and Josh Ross, who was 4-for-7 passing in the first half for Basic, failed to complete any of his final eight passes of the game as the Wolves attempted to rally.

Green Valley repeatedly helped stick Basic with bad field position in the second half. The Wolves began three of their six second-half drives inside their own 10-yard line and none past their own 24-yard line.

• Foothill 54, Coronado 22 -- At Foothill, D'Angelo Jones rushed for 213 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Falcons in a game that included a lengthy weather delay.

Before the stoppage, Jones had bolted for touchdown runs of 6, 52 and 21 yards to give Foothill a 20-6 lead. After play resumed, he added scoring runs of 1 yard and 11 yards.

Ryan Erekson hauled in touchdown receptions of 29 and 56 yards and finished with three catches for 116 yards for the Falcons (4-2, 2-1 Southeast). He also had a 62-yard interception return for a score.

Touchdown passes from Bradley to Daniel Durnian and Chris Kelly put the Wildcats ahead 19-0 early in the second quarter, and a 46-yard interception return by Kevin Cormier made it 25-0.

Kelly's 26-yard run made the score 32-0 just before a 40-minute rain delay during halftime.

Las Vegas running back Jason Theard (90 yards on 10 carries) scored the game's only second-half touchdown on an 11-yard run in the third quarter.

The Sundevils kept the game close, with quarterback Manuel Estrada throwing two touchdown passes.

Quavion Tolliver caught a 25-yard touchdown pass, and Avant Gates had a 50-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter.

Gates' catch narrowed the deficit to 21-14, but that was as close as Eldorado could get.

Antolin finished with four receptions for 118 yards, and Barrera was 7-for-8 passing.

Corey White scored on a 56-yard run and Michael Levine had a 38-yard field goal as the Gaels built a 38-0 lead at halftime.

Orth added a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown, and Drew Bernhardy scored on a 85-yard kickoff return and a 2-yard run before the game was suspended with 8:40 remaining in the fourth quarter and later called off.

Josiah Casella threw for 217 yards in the first half for Valley (1-6). But heavy rains and the Bulldogs' defense limited the Vikings' ability to move the ball in the second half.
