Barely two minutes into Friday's game, it was apparent that Cimarron-Memorial coach Ron Smeltzer planned to make good use of senior running back Eddie Wide.

That plan proved mighty effective.

Wide carried seven straight times to begin the game and finished with 234 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries, guiding the top-ranked Spartans to a 37-7 home victory over Palo Verde.

"The coaches wanted me to step it up tonight," Wide said. "So I stepped it up. That was my best game."

Wide capped the Spartans' 11-play opening drive with a 13-yard run, and he extended the lead to 13-0 on a 43-yard sprint midway in the second quarter.

After teammate Eric Brinkley scored on an 18-yard run, Wide broke loose for a 76-yard TD with two seconds left in the half to make it 27-0. He finished the half with 194 yards on 13 carries.

"Eddie is just a hell of a player," said Smeltzer, whose team improved to 9-0 overall, 5-0 in the Northwest Division. "He's got the type of speed where he can just hit it and go."

Wide scored once more in the fourth quarter, pounding up the middle for a 9-yard touchdown.

The Panthers' TD came on a third-quarter Spartans punt that appeared headed out of bounds. Torin Harris caught Cimarron off guard by grabbing the ball near the sideline and streaking down the left side for a 65-yard score.

But No. 7 Palo Verde (5-3, 2-3) could not solve the Spartans' defense, which held the Panthers to 53 yards in the first half and 171 total.

Smeltzer was satisfied.

"This is a big win for us," he said. "Palo Verde's always a good team. With that crazy offense they have, you never know what's going to happen."

Brinkley finished with 101 yards on 19 carries for Cimarron, and Nick Rhodes rushed eight times for 50 yards.

Cheyenne 26, Mojave 20 -- At Mojave, Deshawn Proby scored on a 3-yard run in overtime as the No. 6 Desert Shields rallied to avoid an upset and remained a game behind unbeaten Cimarron-Memorial in the league standings.

Cheyenne (6-2, 4-1 Northwest) hosts the Spartans on Thursday night.

Proby's overtime touchdown capped a Cheyenne comeback from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

On the Desert Shields' overtime possession, the Rattlers (5-4, 2-3) fumbled a handoff exchange and Cheyenne recovered to wrap up the victory.

Mojave broke a 7-7 tie in the third period with two touchdowns. Marcus Carter scored the second of his two TDs on a 2-yard run, then Chad Kelly threw a 4-yard TD pass to Kris Salvador.

Cheyenne owned the fourth quarter, tying the game at 20 on a 1-yard TD run by Ronnie Green and a 4-yard run by D.J. Campbell.

Campbell had a chance to win the game in regulation, but missed a 21-yard field-goal attempt as time expired.

Cheyenne opened the scoring when Campbell's 1-yard run capped a 15-play, 79-yard drive that consumed more than nine minutes.

Proby, who had 210 all-purpose yards in Cheyenne's win over Palo Verde last week, led the Desert Shields with 90 yards on 14 carries. Campbell completed 7 of 10 passes for 119 yards, and added 45 on the ground.

Carter had 63 yards on 11 carries for Mojave, which was limited to 76 yards rushing.

Barrera hit Kevin Loyd on a 9-yard strike with 1:40 to play to make it 45-41 and stopped the Lions on their ensuing possession to set up a last-second pass attempt from Sierra Vista's 41-yard line.

Sierra Vista led 24-6 in the second quarter, but Barrera threw scoring passes of 25 and 18 yards to Keola Antolin in a 23-second span to make it 24-21 at halftime.

"They had tremendous speed," Lions head coach Mark Sauve said. "We were afraid of the big play all night."
