NORM: Maloofs take wine with their burgers

A Carl's Jr. commercial with the Maloof brothers has caused a stir.

The new Carl's Jr. $6,000 burger commercial featuring the Maloof brothers in a Palms suite is not going down well in Sacramento, Calif.

The ad, unveiled last week in one of the Sky Villas in the Palms' new Fantasy Tower, is causing a stir, in part, because of its timing.

It shows the Maloof brothers, who own the Sacramento Kings, washing down the Carl's Jr. Six Dollar Burgers "with a bottle of Bordeaux wine that's the price of a used Hyundai," according to a Sacramento Bee business reporter.

The Maloof brothers, the story line goes, "were flaunting their wealth at the same time they're asking local voters to help pay for a new Kings arena. Talk shows were buzzing and press conferences were denouncing the campaign's appropriateness."

The Maloofs are facing an uphill fight in the Nov. 7 election. Sacramento County voters are being asked to pass a quarter-cent sales tax to raise $600 million for a new sports and entertainment facility and another $600 million for community projects throughout the county.

Negotiations for the new arena have been at an impasse for months, and there was no movement during last week's meeting between the Maloofs and city officials.

TRAFFIC TALENT

KTNV-TV, Channel 13 has whittled down 250 entries for an on-air traffic reporter to five finalists: Shawn Tempesta, Joscelyn Cook, Kim Smith, Beth Monk and Wendy Lee Curtis.

Monk, a radio traffic reporter for the KKLZ-FM morning show, made headlines this year when she became the first person to be cited under a new city law that makes feeding the homeless illegal.

All five will do on-air traffic reports between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. this week with Mark Pfister and Captain Paul.

Voting will take place at the end of the week.
