Two students attending an alternative program because of disciplinary problems were arrested Thursday for possessing a loaded .38-caliber handgun near school property, Clark County School District police said.
Police spokesman Ken Young said two unidentified males, ages 15 and 17, brought the handgun near the Jeffery Behavioral Junior/Senior High School in North Las Vegas.

Students have to go through a metal detector and are patted down before entering the school.
The police officer assigned to the school saw that the two students were across the street before the school day began and that they appeared as if they were hiding something, Young said. The officer searched the desert and found the gun, Young said.
"He knows the campus, knows the kids pretty well," Young said. "He observed something that just did not look right to him, and his instincts turned out to be right."
Police are investigating why the students brought the gun near the school and whether they are gang members, Young said.
On Sept. 1, a student was arrested at Bonanza High School for bringing a loaded handgun.
Students who have disciplinary problems can be sent to Jeffrey for a minimum of nine weeks.
