Las Vegas High School football coach Chris Faircloth likes his team to play a tough nonconference schedule, but he never expected to be looking at a losing record.

The Wildcats struggled against an out-of-state team for the second straight week on Friday, falling to Skyline (Utah), 35-28.

Quarterback Ben Marlowe rushed 12 times for 88 yards and a touchdown to lead the Eagles, who improved to 3-1 on the season.

Faircloth, whose team took a 14-14 tie into halftime, said his squad expected a victory.

"We don't schedule these good teams so we can lose," said Faircloth, whose team fell to 1-2. We schedule the good teams to beat them. You judge your level of play by the teams you play against."

That level looked satisfactory in the first half.

Marlowe gave Skyline an early lead by capping the game's first drive with a 4-yard touchdown run.

But Las Vegas countered with a 7-yard TD pass from O'Ryan Bradley to D'Angelo Saulsberry and a 4-yard scoring run by Emery Schexnayder to go ahead 14-7 early in the second quarter.

Skyline tied it seven minutes later on a 3-yard run by Chase Pendley, but the Wildcats looked strong heading into halftime.

Even so, Eagles coach Roger Dupaix said he thought his team could take over in the third quarter.

"We're a good second-half team," he said. "We talked about that at halftime, and we were able to come out and get some momentum."

The game turned when Bradley was intercepted twice in a row, the second resulting in a 25-yard return by Brett Binford to put Skyline ahead, 21-14. The Eagles took over from there, going ahead 35-14 on a Kalama Molisi run and a pass from Marlowe to Pendley.

A desperate rally by Las Vegas resulted in late touchdown runs by Schexnayder and Bradley, but an onside kick was recovered by the Eagles with 32 seconds remaining to put the game away.

Bradley competed 19 of 38 passes for 297 yards for Las Vegas, and Chris Kelly had five receptions for 150 yards.
