NORM: Engelstad family aids cancer fight

The Nevada Cancer Institute announced over the weekend that the Engelstad Family Foundation is giving the institute $15 million for lung cancer research, screening and treatment.

The gift, one of the largest of its kind in Clark County, was announced Saturday during the Beach Bash gala hosted by Jim and Joan Hammer at their Red Rock Country Club home.

The Engelstad Family Foundation was formed in June 2002. Ralph Engelstad, owner of the Imperial Palace, died of lung cancer in November 2002.

In a setting featuring a 15-foot high sand castle to honor the Beach Boys, the Bangles opened the entertainment before the Beach Boys closed the night.

Former UNLV football coach John Robinson is back in the game. Robinson has joined NBC's Sunday Night NFL team as John Madden's spotter. Robinson and Madden were high school pals at Jefferson High School in Daly City, Calif. Madden's on-air partner is Al Michaels, who left ABC's "Monday Night Football" after a 20-year run. ...

KVBC-TV, Channel 3 staffers were assured during a staff meeting last week that Sunbelt Communications Co. was not selling the station. The announcement, made by owner Jim Rogers and Sunbelt president and COO Ralph Toddre, came amid a swirl of rumors after the departure of several high-level managers. ...

Film legend Tony Curtis, 81, is back at his home in Anthem after being hospitalized with a touch of bronchitis. He missed Thursday's showing of "Some Like It Hot," a Second Chance Foundation benefit at the Palms' Brenden Theatres. "I was in for a night and a day. I'm feeling great now." ...

V Theater at the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood received a request last week from a caller who wanted to reserve seats for Brad Pitt, Al Pacino and Salma Hayek for Sunday night's performance of "The Fab Four," The Beatles tribute group. But the reservations were later canceled because of "a shooting conflict."
