Students booked in bus gunfire

Police say shooting related to gang strife

Two 17-year-old students from Canyon Springs High School were arrested Friday in connection with the gang-related shooting into a school bus a day earlier.

One of the students was arrested on campus about 2 p.m., and the other was arrested at his home in the afternoon, said Lt. Ken Young of the Clark County School District Police.

The gunfire erupted about 2:45 p.m. Thursday, shortly after the two teens got off a school bus at H Street and Alexander Road in North Las Vegas. After the teens left their bus, one of them fired into a second school bus, Young said. Both buses were carrying Canyon Springs students.

Three bullets hit the back of the bus, but none of the 34 students on board was hit.

The bus driver immediately drove away, then parked at Las Vegas Boulevard near Bruce Street to wait for police.

Young would not say whether the gunshots were intended for a student on the bus, but he did say the shooting was the result of a gang rivalry. With help from the Las Vegas police Gang Crimes Bureau and North Las Vegas police, school district police officers identified the suspects.

One of the teens will be charged with possessing a dangerous weapon on school property. The second will be charged with firing into an occupied vehicle.

They were booked into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center. Police did not release the students' names, citing their ages.

Canyon Springs Principal Ronan Matthew said he found out Friday morning that the buses were carrying some of his students.

"I'm very happy that nobody got hurt," Matthew said. "But at the same time I'm concerned that kids continue to do silly things. Those students (who shot at the bus) should be punished to the full extent of the law. ... Any kid that shoots at a bus will be expelled."

Matthew said he has heard that there are students at his school involved in two gangs, Wood and HTO, which stands for Hustlers Taking Over.

Edward Goldman, associate superintendent of the district's Education Services Division, while not referring specifically to Thursday's shootings, said the school system can take action against students outside of school grounds who threaten the welfare of other students.
