NORM: Gourmet's Top 50 taps newcomers

Dennis Rodman, wearing a pink camisole, made stops at Treasure Island's Social House and Tangerine nightclub.

Three Las Vegas newcomers rank among Gourmet magazine's Top 50 American restaurants, with Joel Robuchon at The Mansion cracking the Top 10 at No. 5.

Listed at No. 21 is Bartolotta Ristorante di Mare, the seafood eatery at Wynn Las Vegas, while Restaurant Guy Savoy, the newest addition at Caesars Palace, is No. 36.

With the three honorees, Las Vegas has tripled its presence on the list, which is compiled every five years.

The lone local entry in 2001 was Julian Serrano's Picasso at Bellagio.

Seven other chefs who made Gourmet's Top 50 have restaurants here: No. 3, Thomas Keller's The French Laundry in Yountville, Calif. (Bouchon, The Venetian); No. 4, Spago, Wolfgang Puck, Beverly Hills (Spago, Forum Shops at Caesars; Chinois, Forum Shops at Caesars; Trattoria Del Lupo, Mandalay Bay; Wolfgang Puck's Bar & Grill, MGM Grand and Postrio, The Venetian); No. 9, Daniel Boulud's Daniel, New York (Daniel, Wynn), and No. 13, Charlie Trotter, Chicago (Aureole, Mandalay Bay).

Mario Batali, the only chef with two restaurants in the Top 50 with Babbo at No. 17 and Vetri and No. 25, both in New York (Babbo is going in The Venetian in January and an unnamed-as-yet eatery is going in Palazzo, The Venetian's sister property that opens late next year); No. 27, Jean-Georges, New York (Prime, Bellagio); No. 34, Gramercy Tavern, Tom Colicchio and Danny Meyer, New York (Colicchio operates Craftsteak at MGM Grand).

Gourmet said Robuchon "is generally considered the greatest chef in the world" and his restaurant at The Mansion is "truly incredible."

Paul Bartolotta's gem at Wynn offers "the widest variety of seafood this side of the Amalfi Coast ... cooked in every imaginable way."

Gourmet's top two: Alinea of Chicago and Alice Waters' Chez Panisse.
