FORFEITS KNOCK OUT DURANGO GIRLS, BOYS
Durango's third-ranked girls basketball team expected to take the court against Bishop Gorman on Friday night with a chance to earn the Southwest Division's top playoff seed.
But before they could lace up their shoes, the Trailblazers were knocked completely out of the playoffs.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association announced Friday afternoon that Durango's boys and girls teams would have to forfeit games for using players who did not reside inside Durango's attendance zone.
The girls forfeited seven Southwest victories, and the boys forfeited five wins. The forfeits knocked both teams out of playoff contention.
Two players on the girls team and one on the boys team were found to be in violation of residency rules.
"The address they gave as their residence is not where they were living," said Bill Garis, Clark County School District director of athletics.
The girls forfeited two victories over Sierra Vista, two over Western, and one each over Bonanza, Clark and Spring Valley.
The boys forfeited wins over Bishop Gorman, Spring Valley, Western, Sierra Vista and Clark.
Garis said the school suspended the players Jan. 31, so they had not participated in games since then.
Garis said the situation was brought to his attention by another school about a week ago and that a subsequent investigation by Durango and the district revealed the allegations were true.
Garis said the Durango administration cooperated fully with the investigation.
"It's a huge disappointment for our kids, school and coaches," Durango principal Mark Gums said.
