SHOOTING STARS: 2007 production calendar busy

Out with the old, in with the new.

Unless, of course, the subject is Las Vegas' 2007 production calendar, which includes both newcomers and holdovers.

Leading the latter: A&E's "Criss Angel: Mindfreak," in residence at the Luxor through March to focus on the title illusionist.

Later this month, the Cinemax series "Sin City Diaries" -- about a high-roller concierge service -- begins production at Media Underground.

Preparations for the show are under way this week at Media Underground's production facility, according to series co-creator Paul Remo.

Media Underground also will produce live introductions and transitions for GSN's weekly "Vegas Night" programming, starting Jan. 15.

"We're trying to create stuff within Clark County," says Remo, who estimates that 90 percent of his business still originates with visiting producers.

Also later this month, Spike TV launches a fifth season of its "Ultimate Fighter" reality series, focusing on 16 multiple martial artists battling for supremacy.

Las Vegas is "truly the perfect setting for the show," comments Peter Symuleski, manager of sports and specials for Spike TV. "Going to Las Vegas for 35 days -- there's a certain excitement there."

And Las Vegas-based Maxxam Entertainment, which shot another kind of competition, "So You Wanna Be an Actor," last year at the now-shuttered Stardust, has plans for additional projects -- including a how-to TV show devoted to cars.

Firing up: Always a popular location, Valley of Fire State Park begins the year with not one but two shoots on tap. A TV commercial for GM's European-based Opel, geared toward the overseas market, shoots there Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by a Taster's Choice coffee ad scheduled Thursday.

London calling: The BBC's flagship technology show, "Click" -- which has reported on everything from e-books to the Great Firewall of China -- visits Las Vegas for an upcoming episode, with shooting on the Strip and downtown scheduled Saturday and Sunday.

"Passage" time: The made-for-TV competition "Nevada Passage" wants you.

That is, if you're up to such daunting challenges as a 10K run at Valley of Fire, an ATV race at Amargosa Dunes, backroads cycling between Tonopah and Goldfield and back-country skiing near Reno.

For the third "Nevada Passage," open auditions are now under way. The contest will bring 20 adventurous athletes to the Silver State in May to test their mettle.

Jan. 31 is the application deadline; audition information is available online at www.nevadapassage.com.
