PLAYER'S EDGE: Palms to 'Open the Vault' for $130,000

Beginning today, you can earn entries into the $130,000 "Open the Vault Giveaway" at the Palms. On Tuesdays (Jan. 9, 16 and 23) and Fridays (Jan. 12, 19 and 26), the casino will select 10 players to compete in a five-minute slot tournament and win a share of $10,000. All 60 winners will be invited to compete for $20,000 in prizes at the finals tournament on Jan. 30. Club Palms members automatically earn entries on all machines (except 100 percent video poker machines). They must swipe their players card each Tuesday and Friday prior to the drawing to receive $5 in free slot play and to activate their entries. Players can earn a maximum of 350 entries for each drawing, and the electronic drum is cleared following each drawing.

January jackpot winners ($200-plus in slots, $300-plus in video poker) at the El Cortez get their choice of a special wallet containing between $10 and $1,000 in free slot play or a $10 gift card to Walgreens, Smith's, ARCO, Shell or Mobil/Exxon, plus they also receive an entry into the following Saturday night drawing for a 42-inch HDTV and four $500 cash prizes.

On Saturday evenings in January, the Fiesta Henderson and the Fiesta Rancho will both draw 10 winners. Eight of the winners will receive $500, while the other two will move on to play "Royal Deal" and win between $1,000 and $10,000 in cash. Amigo Club members receive one entry for every 250 points ($250-$500 coin-in) earned on their card in January. Entries also can be earned at the tables.

Earn 300 same-day points on Tuesdays or Thursdays (through Jan. 16) at the Rampart ($600 coin-in on slots, $1,200 video poker; no redemption required) and receive a lantern that requires no batteries or fuel to operate. There is a limit of one lantern per day, but players earning 1,000 points on Tuesday also will receive a Sak Purse.

Silverton is beginning a 13-week semester of free Bob Dancer video poker classes on Tuesdays. Beginners class starts at 10 a.m. followed by the intermediate class at noon. Tuesday's class discusses Jacks or Better, and every week will cover a different game.
