Audience can tour park without leaving seat

'Disneyland Adventure' brings the park to you

The "Incredibles" family, in back, watches the Pirates of the Caribbean in the ice show "Disneyland Adventure."

Disney on Ice's latest production to land in Las Vegas, "Disneyland Adventure," takes the audience through the whole theme park in one show.

Opening Wednesday at the Orleans Arena and running for 11 performances, the Feld Entertainment-produced show features characters from the Disney/Pixar movie "The Incredibles" as they attempt to see the theme park and meet Disney characters while maintaining their secret identities. But their superpowers come into play when a robot copy of the maniacal Syndrome shows up and Bob, Helen, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack have to save the day.

The Incredibles meet up with Mickey, Minnie and Goofy and interact with the Pirates of the Caribbean and experience such attractions as Space Mountain, the Haunted Mansion and It's a Small World.

Just judging from the story line, the production looks like a logistical challenge, and performance director Scott MacDonald agreed.

"It's a pretty big show," he said in a recent phone interview while on the road. "There are tons of costumes, state-of-the-art lighting and sound. It takes 11 trucks to take all of the stuff from city to city."

Now just halfway through the tour, which began in August in Mexico, the show will travel to 20 cities before finishing up in May. It then takes a two-month rest before heading to Europe.

Despite the grueling schedule, MacDonald said he's still enjoying his job, which is to watch every show and "ensure the best product to the audience."

He keeps an eye on the lighting, choreography and costumes to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. A former skater, MacDonald also helps teach new skaters who come into the show.

"It's pretty demanding," he said. "I'm there two hours before the show and give the performers and technical people notes after the show."

The biggest audience response, he said, comes when Mickey and Minnie come out onto the ice, followed by Cinderella and Snow White. "It's a great show for kids and adults, because they can all relate to Disneyland."
