Last season couldn't have gone much worse for Arbor View's boys volleyball team, which won one match.

But the Aggies have been surprisingly strong this season.

Arbor View went 7-1 last weekend to win the St. Patrick's Day Tournament at Chaparral High School.

The Aggies beat Basic 25-13, 25-22 in the title match.

"It's just unbelievable," Arbor View coach Roger Brown said. "They're starting to get it. Before they were scared of getting hit with the ball and the speed was too much. But now they're humming. They believe they can do something now. Before, they were just happy to have a uniform."

2A HONORS -- Mychal Martinez, who led The Meadows to its fourth consecutive Class 2A boys state basketball championship last month, was named the 2A Player of the Year by state coaches.

The Meadows' Greg Goorjian was named Coach of the Year, and the Mustangs' Camden Goorjian and Brandon Baccus were selected to the Class 2A all-state first team.

SOFTBALL SIGNING -- Foothill softball standout Shantel Straily has signed to play for Benedictine College, an NAIA school in Atchison, Kan.

Straily is a two-time All-Sunrise pick.
