Bill to help hurt soldiers reintroduced

STEPHENS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON -- A bill reintroduced in the Senate on Monday would ensure that soldiers injured in combat could receive a part of their retirement pay plus full disability benefits.

Currently, service members forced by injury to retire before serving 20 years do not qualify for any retirement pay.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the bill he sponsored would pro-rate retirement compensation for service members who planned to make the military a career but are being forced to leave early after being hurt in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This bill will help the thousands of men and women serving in the military, including many Nevadans, who are wounded in the line of duty," Reid said.

A similar bill introduced last year did not pass Congress.
