Apartment fire displaces family, kills dog

One dog died and four people were displaced after an apartment fire in north east Las Vegas Sunday afternoon.

Las Vegas firefighters responded to the Playa Vista Apartments, located at 3700 Bonanza Road near Pecos Road, about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

The fire started in the kitchen of the second story apartment unit. The fire spread and destroyed much of the kitchen and living room, fire officials said.

Only one woman was home during when the fire started and she escaped without injury. The family of four, including one child, are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Firefighters found the canine in the rear of one of the bedrooms. Officials said it appeared that the dog was trying to hide from the fire but was overcome by the smoke and died.

Damage to the unit was estimated at $50,000. The fire was ruled accidental.
