Man killed in Tuesday carjacking attempt identified

The man who was shot to death during an attempted carjacking Tuesday at Sportsman Royal Manor Apartments was Nevada Army National Guard Spc. Dylan Joshua Salazar, Nevada military officials confirmed Thursday.

Salazar, 23, of Las Vegas, was a “traditional” Guard soldier who drills one weekend per month and performs several weeks of annual training. He was not on Guard duty at the time of the deadly shooting, said Sgt. 1st Class Erick Studenicka, a spokesman for the Army National Guard in Carson City.

Salazar enlisted in 2010 and was a heavy horizontal construction engineer in the 277th Engineer Haul Platoon, which drills in North Las Vegas. His Army records list no overseas deployments although he was awarded an Army Reserve overseas training ribbon.

His other awards include the Army Achievement medal; National Defense Service medal; Army Reserve Component Achievement medal; and the Nevada Guard Meritorious Service ribbon.

The Clark County coroner’s office said Salazar died from a gunshot to the head in the parking lot of the apartments in the 5600 block of South Boulder Highway.

Las Vegas police have arrested 20-year-old Julio Renteria, of Henderson, and 22-year-old Adrian McClintock, of Las Vegas, in connection with the shooting.

Police and medical personnel found Salazar dead in the vehicle’s driver seat, according to an arrest report.

In their initial investigation, police said Salazar was getting into his truck when he was approached by two other men who tried to steal his vehicle, then shot him and took off.

Renteria was found hiding in a storage shed of a nearby home. He was identified as the shooting suspect by the apartment complex’s security guard. Police found McClintock between two apartment buildings.

McClintock and Renteria are being held at the Clark County Detention Center. McClintock faces charges of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon and probation violation. Renteria faces a charge of murder with a deadly weapon.
