Teen charged as adult in 71-year-old's death

A 16-year-old who police believe was the getaway driver when a woman was robbed and fatally shot in West Las Vegas faces murder charges as an adult.

Fabian Diaz and William Copeland, 19, were arrested Sept. 28 after Copeland shot 71-year-old Dixie Chaney near H Street and Monroe Avenue, according to Las Vegas police.

Copeland told the driver of the car, Diaz, to pull over so he could demand Chaney give them her purse, police said.

Copeland told police he shot Chaney because she reached into her purse and he was afraid she would shoot him.

Diaz faces charges of murder and attempted robbery, as well as robbery and murder conspiracy charges.

He was booked into Clark County Detention Center with a juvenile hearing on Tuesday.

Copeland has a preliminary hearing November 4 where he will face charges of first-degree murder, robbery conspiracy and attempted robbery.
