Earth Day events set for weekend

Springs Preserve will kick off the 40th anniversary celebration of Earth Day with a family-friendly event today.

Titled "What On Earth Day," the event will feature a science and art fair, Earth Day Olympics and a trade show featuring nonprofit organizations and green business ventures.

Although the anniversary date marking Earth Day is Thursday, the event Saturday will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the preserve, 333 S. Valley View Blvd., at Meadows Lane between Alta Drive and U.S. Highway 95.

Admission for the event is free but regular admission prices apply for access to the preserve's museums and galleries.

In other Earth Day activities today, the Sierra Club has teamed up with several other groups to host a cleanup of the Flamingo Wash at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Decatur Boulevard. Volunteers will be cleaning trash out of the multi-acre site from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Participating organizations include Harrah's Entertainment, Republic Services, the city of Las Vegas, Clark County, Home Depot and American Values Network.
