NEVADA ACCEPTING TEACHER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS

The Nevada Department of Education is seeking nominations for the 2014 Nevada Teacher of the Year recognition program. Nevada’s Teacher of the Year will be entered in the selection process for the 2014 National Teacher of the Year. The deadline for applications is Oct. 1. NONPROFIT PLANS SUPPLIES DRIVE TO HELP STUDENTS

HELP of Southern Nevada, a nonprofit organization that assists low-income families, plans a school supplies drive through Sept. 12 at its headquarters, 1640 E. Flamingo Road. HELP asks for backpacks, paper, pens, pencils, erasers, binders, notebooks, scissors or other supplies. The office is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

HOMEWORK HOTLINE TO START IN SEPTEMBER

After-school homework help will be available to students through the Homework Hotline schedule to run from mid-September through May. Students of all grade levels can call 702-799-5111 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Selected questions will be presented from 4-5 p.m. on Cox cable channels 96 or 111.

Homework Hotline is sponsored by the Clark County School District, Cox Communications, NV Energy and Vegas PBS.

GOLF TOURNAMENT TO RAISE MONEY TO HELP FEED STUDENTS

The third annual Chefs for Kids charity golf tournament is scheduled at 7 a.m. Oct. 13 at Painted Desert Golf Club, 5555 Painted Mirage Road. Chefs for Kids is a nonprofit orgnaization that feeds at-risk youths and teaches them about healthy foods.

Registration is 20 and is due Oct. 6. The tournament format will be a four-person scramble. Players can sign up with a foursome or be assigned to a team. To register, email info@brownblankfeld.com.

The tournament is sponsored by the Brown Blankfeld Group. Findlay Honda plans to offer a new car for a hole-in-one. The CFK program is run by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the American Culinary Federation Chefs of Las Vegas. Hole sponsorships also are available.

FAITH LUTHERAN SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO STAFF ON-CAMPUS STORE

Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School, 2015 S. Hualapai Way, is looking for volunteers to help staff its new campus store, The Shield. The store sells school supplies, uniforms, school-themed apparel, electronics and more. Hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Proceeds from sales at the store will benefit Faith Lutheran’s education initiatives, the school said. Volunteers would be responsible for selling merchandise, stocking, setting up displays and customer service.
