Clark County student wins medals at international history competition

A Clark County student took home seven medals in an international history competition.

Eshaan Vakil, a freshman at Clark High who previously attended Hyde Park Middle School, is the first student from Nevada who has ever qualified and won at this event, in which he competed against the top 85 history students from 38 countries, according to a release from the Clark County School District.

The 2016 International History Olympiad was held July 17-24 at the University of Manoa in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Competitions at the Olympiad include history quiz tournaments, exams, simulations of historical events and a civilization computer game tournament. The top three students in every age division for each event earned gold, silver and bronze medals.

Vakil earned a gold medal in art history; silver medals in recent history, history of the Cold War, international history bee championship and visual history; and bronze medals in naval history and the international history team championship.
