Bicyclist dies after crash involving Northern Nevada judge

GARDNERVILLE — A bicyclist struck by a vehicle driven by a Douglas County judge has died, authorities said.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said 61-year-old Joseph A. Longo of Gardnerville died Tuesday from injuries suffered in the Aug. 20 accident.

Investigators said Longo was riding on Pine Nut Road when he was struck by a vehicle driven by District Judge Michael Gibbons around 11 a.m.

The Record-Courier newspaper reported Gibbons’ lawyer said the judge is “deeply saddened” to hear of Longo’s death.

Investigators said both Longo and Gibbons were traveling west on Pine Nut. The judge was making a right turn onto East Valley Road when the right rear of his vehicle struck the bike.

Longo was not wearing a helmet.

The Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
