Guilty plea entered in death of girl, 2, in northwestern Arizona

KINGMAN, Ariz. — A Mohave Valley man pleaded guilty Thursday to killing one child and abusing two others in 2012.

Matthew L. Smith, 31, faces up to life in prison when sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Paul G. Rosenblatt in Phoenix on Nov. 4.

A 2-year-old girl residing in his home on the Fort Mojave Indian reservation was assaulted multiple times in July, 2012, and died of blunt force trauma and other injuries, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. A second child in the home suffered serious injuries when locked in a bathroom without food and water for two days.

Law enforcement officers discovered a third child in the home had suffered a broken arm.

Smith pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, child abuse, and assault.
