Two people were killed in a traffic accident in south Las Vegas early Tuesday morning.
The crash happened about 1:15 a.m. at Las Vegas Boulevard South and Windmill Lane, near Interstate 15 and Blue Diamond. A moped was stopped at a red light at the intersection when an Ford F-150 pickup slammed into it from behind at what Las Vegas police said was at a high rate of speed. The two people on the moped were thrown off.
The pickup continued through the red light and was hit by a 2005 Toyota Corolla that was turning left through the intersection, police said. The Corolla driver, Christina Guajardo, was not injured.
The pickup still continued moving, though the moped was lodged beneath the front of the truck.
One moped rider died at the scene and the other was pronounced dead at University Medical Center. The Clark County coroner’s office had not released their names as of noon.
The truck driver fled the scene, police said. They found the truck later on a side street with the moped still attached to it. Police were still searching for the driver.
While police were investigating, three motorists drove through the police barricades and were arrested on charges of drunken driving.
The intersection was closed for several hours and reopened about 7:45 a.m.
These were the 20th and 21st traffic-related fatalities in Las Vegas police jurisdiction this year.
