Application period opens for Nevada Supreme Court seat

The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection started accepting applications Monday for the Supreme Court vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Nancy Saitta.

Attorneys with 15 years of legal experience, including two in Nevada, are have until 5 p.m. Sept. 9 to apply. A 19-page application can be found online.

Chief Justice Ron D. Parraguirre said in a statement that the person appointed to the vacancy will serve in Carson City.

The commission, a seven-member panel that includes the chief justice, three nonattorneys and three attorneys, is tasked with conducting background investigations into each of the applicants. The group is then scheduled to interview applicants on Oct. 17, 18 and 19, and submit three nominees to Gov. Brian Sandoval, who is expected to make the final choice on a replacement to serve until Jan. 7, 2019.

The applications are open to public view on the Supreme Court website, and the commission invited written public comments about the qualifications of the applicants.

Saitta, 65, said she intends to continue working on child and juvenile advocacy issues and chair the Blue Ribbon for Kids Commission, the Coalition to Combat Criminal Sexual Exploitation of Children and the Juvenile Justice Reform Commission. She also will serve as a senior justice.
