Armed suspect dead after officer-involved shooting in North Las Vegas

An armed man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Sunday night.

The shooting occurred about 8:49 p.m. at a Circle K convenience store at Eastern and Searles avenues, near Owens street.

Many of the events leading up to the shooting were still under investigation late Sunday night, but police said the incident began as a traffic stop and involved a white sedan and a red SUV.

The officers were investigating the suspects, a man and a woman, for about 20 minutes when police suddenly had to chase the man on foot.

North Las Vegas police spokeswoman Sgt. Chrissie Coon said what occurred next happened very quickly: the man doubled back toward the vehicles, and an officer used a stun gun on him. Then shots were reported fired about 8:49 p.m.

One officer fired at the man.

Medical personnel pronounced the man dead on the scene. Coon said a gun was found near his body.

The woman was detained on the scene, Coon said.

Police are expected to release more information about the officer’s interaction with the man and the sequence of events leading up to the shooting in the coming days.

The man’s identity will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office after his family has been notified.

The officers were not injured.
