Assaulted railroad officer released from hospital in Las Vegas

A Union Pacific Corp. officer who was injured in a fight Thursday morning has been released from the hospital, a railroad spokesman said.

Metro responded to the "assist an officer" call at 7:10 a.m. near the intersection of A Street and Owens Avenue, Metro said.

Union Pacific spokesman Francisco Castillo said the officer noticed a trespasser on railroad property and called local authorities before confronting the trespasser. The trespasser became violent and the officer again called local authorities for help, Castillo said. Police didn't say whether the trespasser was male or female.

The injured railroad officer was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with nonlife-threatening injuries and was later released. He is expected to recover fully and return to work in several days, Castillo said.

One person is in custody in connection with the incident, and faces a charge of attempted murder and battery on a protected person, Metro officer Michael Rodriguez said.
