Clark County firefighter hospitalized after battling blaze in south valley

A Clark County firefighter was hospitalized Wednesday evening after a garage fire at a south valley home, the department announced.

Fire crews were called just before 6 p.m. to a house at 6767 Boccelli Court, near South Rainbow Boulevard and West Wigwam Avenue. The garage was engulfed in a blaze that extended into the home's first floor, Deputy Fire Chief John Steinbeck wrote in a release.

The people inside had evacuated and were uninjured, the release said.

One of 26 firefighters at the scene was taken to University Medical Center for possible heat exhaustion, but was "stable and doing well," Steinbeck said about 9:15 p.m.

The firefighter was inside the house attacking the flames "when he began to have some medical issues," Steinbeck said. He said six to 10 firefighters are hospitalized every year for symptoms of heat exhaustion.

The fire's cause and estimated cost of damage were not available, the release said.
