Coroner IDs man who died in Thursday crash on 215 Beltway

The Clark County coroner has identified a man who died Thursday morning after entering traffic on foot in the southwest valley.

Paul Lopez, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene around 10 a.m. on the 215 Beltway near Sahara Avenue.

Initial reports indicated the incident was a vehicle crash involving two vehicles, but further details revealed the incident involved a semi-truck and a person on foot.

Witnesses told Nevada Highway Patrol troopers that the man was driving with the hood of his Hyundai Genesis up when he then pulled his vehicle over on the right shoulder on southbound 215 under Sahara Avenue. Lopez then entered the travel lanes on foot where he was struck by a commercial truck, trooper Chelsea Stuenkel said.

The truck’s driver was uninjured and remained on scene, Stuenkel said. No charges have been filed.

The Clark County coroner ruled Lopez’s cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries due to being struck by the semi-truck and the manner of death a suicide. After the autopsy, investigators had reason to believe that Lopez allowed the truck to strike him.
