Fire damages vacant building near Stratosphere; 1 person possibly injured

One person may have been injured in a fire in a vacant two-story building near the Stratosphere early Friday morning.

The fire, reported about 12:15 a.m., heavily damaged the apartment building at 240 W. Cincinnati Ave., near Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said. The second floor was destroyed and the first floor had heavy damage, he said.

The cause of the fire remains unclear.

Witnesses at the scene told fire investigators that they had seen squatters entering and exiting the building, Szymanski said. Witnesses also reported that a person crawled from the second-story window onto the first-story roof and jumped to the ground, running from the scene.

About 2 a.m. a 911 call came from a person one block from the fire scene, Szymanski said. Fire medics treated the man and estimated he had burns to 20 percent of his body. Fire investigators are trying to determine if this is the same person seen leaving the apartment building.

The Clark County Fire Department also assisted in fighting the blaze.
