Firefighters battling church blaze in northwest valley

One hundred firefighters battled a blaze in a church Friday night in the northwest valley.

Just after 7 p.m., firefighters responded to a fire at Meadows Fellowship Foursquare, 7801 W. Alexander Road, between Cimarron Road and Buffalo Drive, according to Las Vegas fire and Metro officials.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue department spokesman Tim Szymanski said responding crews faced heavy smoke as they were trying to locate the source of the fire.

He said that the fire originated in a crawl space near modular building units. No one was in any of the buildings when the fire began, he said.

Szymanski said that the fire presented a “very difficult situation” for firefighters, who had to nearly “crawl on their bellies” to access the area burning while water pooled on the ground. High wind speeds whipped at the flames, making them more intense and spreading them faster.

It took an hour for firefighters to extinguish the flames, Szymanski said.

The department is investigating the cause of the fire. No cost estimate has been established.
