Friday rainfall may tie 1986 record

If you were hoping for record-breaking rainfall on Friday, it was close, but evening measurements suggest a tie, according to the National Weather Service.

Total rainfall at McCarran International Airport amounted to 0.17 inches, meteorologist Chris Stachelski said. It tied the 1986 record.

The day is not over, but the rain mostly is. Parts of the valley were experiencing on-and-off sprinkles that will be reduced to overnight drizzles, Stachelski said.

Parts in Henderson reported about 0.3 inches in rainfall, Stachelski said.

The chance of rain late Friday remains about 60 percent, Stachelski said, but only Sandy Valley and Primm were reporting precipitation Friday evening. The valley’s chances will be diminished to 20 percent for Saturday.

That was not the case Friday morning when slick roads and crashes throughout the valley made for congested morning commutes.

At least 30 accidents on Southern Nevada highways were reported from 6:30 a.m. to about noon. For that, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson had two words: “Slow down.”

About noon, traffic was still dodging the third jack-knifed semi-trailer of the day, this one on an eastbound 215 Beltway offramp to southbound U.S. Highway 95. The crash happened about 9 a.m., and blocked the left travel lanes of the ramp, according to Hixson. No injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved.

Roads have reopened on southbound U.S. 95 near Cheyenne Avenue, Hixson said. A two-vehicle wreck happened just after 8:30 a.m., blocking the left lanes. There were no injuries.

A FedEx double trailer jack-knifed on the Interstate 15 offramp leading to the eastbound 215 Beltway shortly after 7 a.m., closing all lanes, Hixson said. No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved. Roads were reopened there.

The second semitrailer, carrying approximately ten gallons of diesel, jack-knifed on the southbound airport connector to 215 Beltway loop ramp about 7:30 a.m., according to the Regional Transportation Commission. All lanes were blocked at one point but were reopened after about an hour.

Temperatures in Clark County will likely remain in the 50s until Saturday. The National Weather Service expects sunshine and 60-degree temperatures to return Saturday afternoon.
