Hiker dies after 15-story fall at Red Rock Canyon

A hiker died Thursday evening after falling about 160 feet from a trail at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

The person who died had been hiking with a group before the fall, which happened about 6:15 p.m., said Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Timothy Hatchett.

The hiker sustained significant injuries after the fall, and Metro’s search and rescue unit responded. After reaching the hiker, crews attempted to resuscitate the hiker, but the person who fell was soon declared dead on scene.

It was unclear as of 7:30 p.m. which trail the hiker had been on when the fall happened. It was also unclear what caused the hiker to fall.

The coroner’s office will name the hiker who died once his or her family has been notified.
