Lightning strike causes fire in Las Vegas Country Club home

A lightning strike caused a fire Sunday at a house within the Las Vegas Country Club neighborhood, a fire official said.

The fire was called in at 2:51 p.m. Sunday to 1128 Pinehurst Drive near East Desert Inn Road and South Maryland Parkway, said Assistant Fire Chief Sandra Baker of the Clark County Fire Department. A large plume of smoke was visible above the home.

A tree adjacent to the home was struck by lightning, and the fire spread to the house, Baker said. Responders arrived at 2:53 p.m., and the fire was extinguished at 3:27 p.m., Baker said.

No one was home during the fire, and no injuries were reported, Baker said. Two cats were rescued from the home.

Two engines and eight firefighters from Las Vegas Fire and Rescue assisted the Clark County Fire Department in putting out the fire, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue Officer Tim Szymanski said.

Most of the damage was in the attic area, and portions of the second story, which received water and fire damage, Baker said.

The cost of damage is estimated at $200,000, Baker said.

No more information was immediately available.
