Pursuit ends in crash that shut down beltway for hours

A short police pursuit ended in a crash that shut down the Las Vegas Beltway east of U.S. Highway 95 for more than three hours Saturday afternoon.

Trooper Loy Hixson, spokesman for the Nevada Highway Patrol, said a highway patrolman was driving north on the beltway near Ann Road at about 2:20 p.m. when a Ford pickup sped by and nearly hit him.

The trooper chased the pickup north and then east on the beltway until the truck collided with a Jeep near Sky Pointe Drive.

Hixson said the 18-year-old man driving the truck and the occupants of the Jeep were taken to University Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening.

After the crash, authorities learned that the truck had been reported stolen, and the 18-year-old was taken into custody after his release from the hospital, Hixson said.

The beltway was reopened to traffic at about 5:30 p.m.
