Teen critical, woman arrested after northwest valley crash

A 16-year-old girl was in critical condition and a 40-year-old woman was arrested after a crash in the northwest valley Friday night, Las Vegas police said Saturday.

Police were called about 9:20 p.m. to the intersection of North Buffalo Drive and West Gowan Road, where a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox and a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire collided, police wrote in a release.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate the Chevrolet was traveling north on Buffalo, approaching Gowan, at the same time the driver of the Pontiac was traveling east on Gowan, approaching Buffalo.

The Chevrolet entered the intersection against a red light and crashed into the front end of the Pontiac, which had a green light, police said. The front driver's side of the Chevrolet hit the front of the Pontiac and both vehicles slid to the northeast corner of the intersection, the release said.

The right, front passenger of the Pontiac, a 16-year-old Las Vegas girl, was thrown from the vehicle. She was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition, the release said.

The 20-year-old woman who was driving the Pontiac and the Pontiac's other two passengers, a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, suffered moderate injuries, the release said.

The 40-year-old woman who was driving the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries and was arrested "for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol," police said. A 6-year-old girl who was a passenger in the Chevrolet also suffered minor injuries.
