Man arrested for having gun on school grounds

A man was arrested Friday morning after bringing a gun onto school property.

Derrick Stiff, 42, was arrested just after dismissal at Liberty High School at 10:45 a.m. by Clark County School District police after officers discovered a loaded .45-caliber handgun under Stiff's car seat during a routine traffic stop, said school police Lt. Ken Young.

Stiff has a concealed weapon permit, but guns are not allowed by law on school property, Young said. He was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon on school property, a gross misdemeanor, and booked at the Clark County Detention Center.

Stiff is a parent of a student at the school. He has no known problems with students, parents or teachers, Young said.

"This is just for possession," he said.
