Man faces arson charge after dumpster fire at Neonopolis

A man faces a first-degree arson charge in connection with a Thursday morning fire at the loading dock at Neonopolis on the Fremont Street Experience.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue investigators said 59-year-old Elliot Dew Sr. set fire to a dumpster at the downtown mall, near Ogden Avenue and Fourth Street, about 3 a.m.

Fire sprinklers kept the blaze near the dumpster before it was put out. There were no injuries reported, investigators said.

Security personnel told fire investigators that surveillance video shows a “street person” they frequently see around Neonopolis. The video shows the same man starting a fire in the dumpster, security personnel said.

Just before 4 a.m. Friday, Fremont Street security guards detained Dew and turned him over to fire investigators who questioned and arrested him. He is being held at the Clark County Detention Center.
