Man who died in North Las Vegas crash identified by coroner's office

A man who was killed in a Sunday crash in North Las Vegas has been identified as 42-year-old Max Montoya of Las Vegas, the Clark County coroner's office said Friday.

Montoya was driving a 2004 Ford Ranger pickup "at a very high rate of speed" south on Losee Road near Gowan Avenue, North Las Vegas police said.

At 5:19 p.m., he drifted to the right and struck a steel power pole off the roadway. He was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Investigators believed excessive speed was a factor in the crash and were trying to determine why the vehicle left the roadway .

The cause and manner of Montoya's death were still pending, the coroner's office said.
