Obama will attend 20th annual Lake Tahoe Summit

CARSON CITY — Harry Reid’s swan song as the Nevada senator involved in the creation of the Lake Tahoe Summit will be noteworthy, with invitees including President Barack Obama and Nevada’s own The Killers performing at the Aug. 31 event.

The Tahoe summit, an annual gathering to focus on improving the environmental quality of the national treasure, began in 1997 when President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore attended following a personal invitation from Reid.

The 20th annual summit will feature other guests and speakers who have yet to be named.

The first summit brought national attention to the lake and spurred passage of the first Lake Tahoe Restoration Act in 2000. Since then, hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested to restore Lake Tahoe’s clarity and natural systems in the local watersheds.

The 2015 summit featured topics on how to curb wildfires and keep invasive species out of the lake, famed for its clarity.

The lake’s water level rose this past winter because of a decent snow year following years of drought. The lake is shared by California and Nevada.

The event will be held at Harveys Lake Tahoe Hotel and Casino at Stateline.
