Water main break may have been earthquake-related, NHP says
The water main break on Eastern Avenue near U.S. Highway 95 that diverted traffic on Sunday may have been caused by the earthquake, Nevada Highway Patrol said.
The agency discovered water spewing out of what appeared to be a hole or sinkhole about 10 feet in diameter on northbound Eastern just under the highway about 5 a.m., NHP trooper Loy Hixson said.
Traffic was being diverted near the area after a portion of the roadway collapsed, NHP said Sunday in a tweet.
Nevada Department of Transportation and the city of Las Vegas had been at the scene setting up traffic control and taking control of repairs, Hixson said.
A 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook Las Vegas and surrounding areas Friday morning.
